Tunis’s Medina provides a sharp contrast to the modern Tunis that surrounds it. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site that is an atmospheric maze of narrow streets, quiet residential areas and lively trade souks. At its heart is the 9th century Great Mosque and its pillared prayer hall with 184 pillars taken from sites such as Carthage. The souks include the brilliant El Berka jewelry souk at the site of the old slave market, the El Trouk clothing souk, the Koumach textiles souk, and the fragrant El Attarine perfumers’ souk. If you wander through the medina, you will come across a number of palaces worth visiting – the 18th century Dar Ben Adballah, the 18th century Dar Hussein,
and the 16th century Dar Othman.There is also the Tourbet el Bey funerary monument.
