About Selcuk

Ephesus

Selcuk, Turkey

Description:
These ancient city ruins are the best preserve in the entire eastern Mediterranean area.  The site is very large - the path linking both entrances is about 3 kilometers long.  A great number of impressive structures line the ancient streets, including the Great Theater (an enormous open-air semi-circle theater) and the Library of Celcus (carefully architected to appear larger than it actually is).
Getting there:
There are two entrances to the ruins, both of which can be easily accessed by taxi from nearby Selcuk.  (Many guesthouses and hotels in Selcuk offer free lifts to the ruins and back.)  Mini-buses pass frequently by the turn-off toward the north gate (it's a short walk from there to the entrance).  Most travelers recomend approaching the ruins from the southern gate.

This place is SOOOOOO much bigger than you think it's going to be. I took a tour - which I highly recommend. It gives context and history, explanation and anecdotes in an interactive way that you wouldn't get any other way....Plus it's one of those once-in-a-lifetime explorations, so I vote for making the most of it!(the tour I took also included the Temple of Artemis (one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world) and the House of the Virgin Mary. They're all very close to each other...

These ancient ruins are fantastic! I spent the better part of a day here, and could easily have spent another if I had had the time. The Lybrary was the high point of the ruins for me, but one of the creative toilet signs was definitely up there as well (check out the photo I uploaded - who the hell came up with thing anyways?)

I went to Ephesus during my stay in Samos island. It's very close, just a short cruise to the Turkish coast. The ruins are impressively huge and they say most of the site has not yet been escavated! An ancient city, with temples, theatres, houses... The facade of the Celsus library is spectacular, so high and impressive.

A great place to see the ruins, outside of Greece.  I found this area to be fascinating.  And pretty well preserved too!
