Emperor Justinian (527-565 AD) believed that a tomb dating from the 300s was John's, so he built a great church above it in the 500s. In later centuries the ruined church was pillaged for building materials, but it has been restored to some extent. Payment Accepted:

Sep 9, 2009 The Basilica of Sant John (St. Jean Aniti) was a great church in Ephesus constructed by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. It stands over the believed burial site of St. John, who is identified as the apostle, evangelist (author of the Fourth Gospel) and prophet (author of Revelation). The basilica is on the slopes of Ayasoluk Hill near the center of Selçuk, just below the fortress and about 3.5 km (2 miles) from Ephesus. Jul 1, 2010 A very impressive and large site in Selcuk. There are many well posted signs and you can get a pamphlet that lets you enjoy the history on your own (no need for guide). You can breeze through it in just over an hour, but allow a 1/2 day at least if you want to take photos. The baptism pool area is interesting and the site has a nice panoramic view looking down on Selcuk as it is near the top of a hill. Oct 30, 2008 The site is beautifully landscaped to give a serene atmosphere. There is a great view of Selcuk from the edge of the ruins. Most travel agents don't acknowledge this place because they have no time on their itineraries to bring tourists here. So it's a great escape from hoardes of tourists.
