The Hippodrome
About The Hippodrome
The Hippodrome is a long strech of space now functioning more or less as a pleasant walkway beside the Blue Mosque. For over a thousand years it served as Istanbul's principal gathering area, where chariot races took place. This location has been the site of angry uprisings, riots, one successful revolution, and the slaughter of thousands. At the center of the Hippodrome is Kaiser Wilhem's Foutain, a gift the German emperor presented to Abdul Hamit in 1901. At the southern end, are some unusual structure including the Obelisk of Theodosius (carved in 1500 B.C. in Egypt), and an interesting "snake column" formed in a spiral shape.

Sep 19, 2010 In the old days this was the place to be to see the chariot races, nowadays this an ideal place to be because of the proximity of all the local "attractions" like the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. It is a kind of park with lots of benches where you can rest and have a look at the locals with there daily activities as well as the place to be to drink a nice cup of Turkish apple tea. Sep 29, 2009 Grab a seat at the outdoor patio area nearby Aya Sophia and have some Turkish Tea. Watch the people wander about...great place to unwind in between seeing the sites. The park beside the Hippodrome also acts as a nice frame for pictures of the Blue Mosque or Aya Sophia too. Feb 11, 2010 this whole square with the obelisk and the serpent column and the column of constantine was nice. all three monument were given from different countries. specifically for the obelisk was originally from Karnak and ive been to Karnak as well.
