St. Sophia Cathedral is considered to be one of the highlights of a trip to Kyiv. The golden onion domes (added in the 18th century) are iconic, and its large interior is particularly impressive. It was founded in the 11th century and still contains some original mosaics and frescoes. It was the center of regional culture and still a rallying point for Ukranian nationalism.
The cathedral was built by Yaroslav I the Wise, and a fresco of his family can still be seen in the church. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was also recently voted as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ukraine.
