Nov 2, 2010 Balaklava was a top secret submarine base during the cold war. The Soviets built an entire sub-base into the mountain with access underwater from both sides. Balaclava harbour is a natural deepwater port and the underground base was a complete nuclear strike base, including maintenance bays for 3 subs and space for 6 attack subs. Today it is a museem. very interesting and fascinating. Looks like stright out of a 007 movie. The town and port side of Balaclava is amazingly beautiful. great restaurants and bars along the pier. New hotels cater to your needs. Aug 3, 2011 Very interesting submarine base. It was just a pity that when I was there they only gave tours in Russian. Could not understand anything what was being said but it was still impressive none the less. Related Links
