Aug 23, 2009 There are 2 cathedrals still standing. The older one, built in the 14th-15th centuries, was damaged by bombs in WW2; the skeletal walls stand as a testimony to the ordeal that Coventry endured. The "new" cathedral was built in the 1950s to replace it. My husband and I sang with a choir on tour at Coventry in 1986. We sang inside the new cathedral and looked out from the choir loft toward the glass walls of the narthex where myriads of angels had been etched into the glass, from floor to ceiling. Later we also sang outside at the old ruins. All of us were touched by the ruined beauty of that hallowed ground. Jan 9, 2009 Absolutely beautiful...the cathedral has stood the test of time after being bombed in WWII. The bell tower still stands. Feb 15, 2009 Check out the ruins, and then read about Churchill's decision.
