The Imperial War Museum was founded in 1917 and is located in the former Bethlehem “Bedlam” Hospital for Care of the Insane.  It shows the history of Britain’s 20th century wars and honours those who served without glorifying war.  Aside from displays of guns, planes, and other equipment, you can also see some excellent exhibits on the Holocaust, a trench warfare exhibit, and The Blitz Experience – taking you through life during London’s Blitz.  There is also an outstanding collection of war paintings from the Official War Artists.

This remains one of my favorite museums. On every visit, I have found something that catches my attention and prompts me to learn more. On my last visit, I took the time to check out the Berlin Wall pieces outside. It was a part of my history and it felt pretty cool to see the "artifacts" on display. I also found the Holocaust exhibition and the Trench experience moving. I believe these types of exhibits are tremendously important. My youngest son still talks about trench life in WWI. I plan on taking him to Gallipoli one day to show him actual battlefields of that time. Also, I think it is worthwhile to note that the holocaust exhibit housed in the old mental hospital brought tears to my wife's eyes. I recommend a visit or two.
Good Journeys!

I've always been an "Anglophile", and find myself drawn to symbols of US/UK's special relationship. Those things are in abundance at the Imperial War Museum in London . We spent hours wandering the exhibit halls, witnessing thousands of relics from Britain 's past, all to the betterment of the human experience. This American left with a renewed sense of respect and pride for our most special friend, the United Kingdom .

This is an incredible museum, and worth a trip for anyone regardless of age. There are things that appeal to children through to seniors, and the messages are universal for all. The Holocaust exhibit is a sobering experience, and also includes the horrors of other genocides worldwide from the 20th century to the present. The museum entrance is free (donations are suggested), and it's definitely worth it to take the time and visit.

Its not just a war museum which you watch the objects through the glass. No, it's an interactive museum- you can go into airplanes, submarines, armoured cars, take pictures with tans, missiles and cannons- and also experience trenches of the I WW, know more about the Holocaust, the cruelty of the Nazi Empire and understand and give more value to the importance of the allies who striked them down!

A great source of information about the British involvement in the First and Second world wars. There are many life sized replicas and real vehicles, weapons and soldier equipment on display. It is definatly worth checking out.
