The London Underground (also known as the Tube) opened in 1863 as the first subway system in the world.  Today it provides over a billion journeys per year, making it the 7th largest in the world.

The London Underground provides excellent coverage through London as there are 270 stations and 250 miles of track for 11 different subway lines.  Basic fares are considered quite expensive, although there are substantial savings via the Oyster Card.

As far as subways go, the London Underground is the easiest to get around. It is very efficient and quick. It is nice that everything is not only in English, but laid out in colors and numbers for easy reading by all. I'm a late night person so it closes too early for me (by midnight) but London taxi drivers are the best in the world so getting a cab is easy and safe. No trip to London would be complete without a ride on the London Underground.

I come from a place without subways where you rely on having a car, so I think the Tube is fantastic! Not having to worry about parking is fantastic! It's so efficient, extremely user friendly, and goes everywhere I need to go in London, with only a few exceptions. With how many millions of tourists the city hosts every year, it pretty much has to be easy to use!

Great and very clear map, easy to understand. Easy to navigate in stations. Complex, but good. The downside is old trains and poor conditioning. The slogan "Mind the gap" is so funny...
If you have visited London and didn't ride the tube, you've missed 50% of it :-)

Handy way to get around London if not some engineering work is taking place. You can be surprised that half of the trip you done on foot walking on long tunnels which connect the entrance to the platforms. Walking trip is included in ticket price ;)

As a first timer in London I was wonderfully surprised how easy it was to find my way around by taking the tube. It's all there. Clear directions, reliability, speed. What more could you want?
