Description:
London’s National Gallery has an excellent collection of over 2,000 paintings that focuses on European art from the 13th to 19th centuries.  The National Gallery was founded in 1824 and now has a collection that ranks well with the other leading art galleries in Europe.   Its collection has been expanding over the years, being funded by the state and by donations.   It remains comparatively small compared to museums such as the Louvre (although of high quality), making it easy to digest in a trip.  Artists featured include Van Eyck, da Vinci, Velasquez, Monet, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Gogh, and a lengthy list of other master artists.   Some of the many masterpieces include Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, Constable’s Hay Wain, Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait, da Vinci’s Virgin on the Rocks, and Hogarth’s Marriage-a-la-mode.

The National Gallery covers a little bit of everything, although the Impressionist Wing is tops over any other version elsewhere. If you walk around to the side (to your left as you're walking out, you will find the National Portrait Gallery, which is also nice.

I consider the gallery to be a must-see place while in London. I am even thinking of having my wedding reception there. My fave halls are the 1200-1500 rooms - those paintining there are marvelous, a real treat for the eyes and the brain.

I would go there every couple of days jsut to look at my favorite paintings, ... I would just go in, look 5 min at Monet's paintings, and leave to continue my day... It was my sunshine when the weather wasn't as sunny...

Lots of beautiful portraits and pictures. Even if you don't know that much about art, it's a great place to start.
