One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of redirect earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large redirect standing stones and sits at the centre of the densest complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds

Stonehenge stands on a picturesque field near Salisbury Plain, west of the town of Amesbury. On the occasion that I got to experience Stonehenge, my wife was driving and we had a pleasant drive there from London. There were less tourists on site than I expected and it was easy to access the area around stonehenge. I was surprised to find that Stonehenge itself was separated from the road just by a standard wire mesh fence. Although I had seen pictures of Stonehenge, I was still moved when I saw it for the first time. Stonehenge is not a single structure but consists of a series of earth, timber, and stone structures. I t is c omposed mainly of thirty upright stones, each over ten feet tall and aligned in a circle, with thirty stones perched horizontally atop the upright stones in a continuous circle. There is also an inner circle composed of similar stones. I learned that no one is sure why Stonehenge was built, how old it is, or who built it. Theories, range from religious temples to an astronomical observatory. It is a “must see” and I am certainly thankful to have seen it. Be sure to take your camera with fresh batteries and lots of memory. It can be windy, so a light jacket or sweater might be a good thing to take with you as well. Hiking in the area is permitted, but be aware of private lands in the area. It is a great place to have a picnic. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO’s 's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986. Good journeys!

Ok, it is touristy, very much so. And it wasn't as big as I thought it would be. But still it is Stonehenge and it was amazing. The audio-guide they give you is really good even if it means that all the people stop at the same place and cause something of a traffic jam. Just try to come in early before the big tour busses come in.
If you are really interested in this kind of monuments and this period in British history then you can follow the arrows indicating walking tours around Stonehenge. The area is littered with burial mounds and other prehistoric monuments.
The gift shop has some really kitschy stuff but they also have some really nice postcards of the monument.

Stonehenge I found to be an amazing place!! Yes it is in between the main motorway and have to walk across another small road to get there but after all this monument has stood in this field for such a long time, and is just amazing!! Would suggest getting in early to beat the crowd and dressa s warm as possible - was absolutely freezing!! I got a day tour out there with a local company - to do Stonehenge by itself was pretty cheap I think about 20pounds from memory (2010).... Definately one of those places you have to see for yourself!!

I have to admit I was underwhelmed with Stonehenge!!!! I know it's probably blasphemous to say, but it's true! While I can appreciate the archaeological significance of the site, and it is truly amazing that some of the stones have moss on them that is only found in certain areas hundreds of miles away, it is still a lot smaller and less impressive than I had been led to believe. You also can't get very close to them.

Stonehenge was something I always wanted to see, but it wasn't quite what I thought it would be. It was incredible, but being sandwiched in between a motorway and another road, and surrounded in metal fencing kind of took away from the whole experience for me. I always pictured it being in a remote location so it was a little bit of a let down to be so close to civilization. I'm glad I saw it, but it took a bit of imagination.
