Edinburgh’s Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence of the Queen in Scotland.  Notable is the lavishness of the decorations in the State Apartments, with masterwork carved plaster ceilings and giant tapestries.   The adjacent (now-ruined) abbey was the first part of this complex, having been built in 1128.  Other building were added over the next few hundred years and the oldest fully surviving part of the building dates back to 1529.

Mary Queen of Scots lived for six years here, and you can view her apartments as well as the room where her secretary David Rizzio was murdered.  Much intrigue happened in these rooms.

Yip, the "Royal Mile" is the road in the Old Town that goes from the Castle at the top, to the Palace at the bottom. This is the heart of tourist Edinburgh. If you're looking for Kilt-Towels, Loch Ness Monster Hats or a fake William Wallace sword, this is the place to go. The castle tickets are a bit steep, but worth that once in a lifetime experience, though forking out for the extra audio guide is not necessary , as there are very informative sign posts, plaques and descriptions everywhere. The palace is also a good visit, though is not accessible if the royal family is in.

my favourite European city, nice people, nice pubs, nice sights there are several offers for sightseeing tours free of charge which you can do during the day and at night you can go on a ghost tour *uuuhhhh* which is very interesting when you believe in demons and ghosts! afterwards you can go for a drink with your tour guide

High Street runs from the Castle, site of the annual Edinburgh Tattoo and Festival, past many shops, ST. Giles Cathedral, to Holyrood Palace. Nearby, below the castle, are the Princes Street gardens. The Scots are among the most friendly people I've ever met.

Interesting Castle. It is one of the homes of the Queen. Because of that, most of the rooms are off limits. You can still see several, which are quite lavish. Also, there are the ruins of an Abbey on site, which is quite impressive. I'm glad I went.

High street is also known as the Royal Mile and is the main tourist walk in Edinburgh leading from the Castle to the Palace, both of which are the major reason to come to town in the first place.
