Caernarfon Castle is located in a strategic position on Wales coast, near or on sites that both the Romans and the Normans used for their own defensive structures.  Caernarfon Castle was built in the 13th century under Edward I, and is a grand building that was modeled after the walls of Constantinople.   It was intended as the English power center in the region.  While not as defensively strong as some of the other Welsh castles, it is perhaps more architecturally grand, as befitting its role as a seat of power.  The castle overlooks and partly encircles within its walls its namesake town.  Its role as a “fort on the shore” means that it commands good views of the surrounding areas.

It's a historical city and has been around since the early Middle Ages. If I do remember correctly, it was built during the Anglo-Saxon conquest so it predates centuries before the Middle Ages. Though it's just a shell, one can envision how grand the castle must have been. In the 1960's, the main circular platform in the middle of the castle was the place of Prince Charles' coronation.

One of the well maintained castles in Wales, Caernarfon is huge and has a lot to offer tourists since the views from the top are pretty good. I stayed in a hostel just next to the castle which was also pretty old so it sort of blended with the castle structure too. The Prince Of Wales - Charles' coronation was held inside this castle.

The castle is huge and if you're short of time maybe the best way to explore it is not to watch long films in inner rooms, but to take an unhurried walk around its walls, then over them, go up to the castle towers and enjoy the views of the city, the castle and the Irish sea.

Large castle with great views and lots of places to discover. Most of the information on the castle can be found in the Eagle Tower. The actor in the film is a bit overly dramatic at times but the information is really in depth.

Where Kings and Princes have been coronated for a long time. It's fun to walk the ramparts and picture what it looked like 500 years ago.
