Oct 28, 2008 It's a mighty trek down to the Havasupai Indian Reservation, but once there you are rewarded with crystal blue waters (though cold) and beautiful waterfalls. Horses are available for packs or riders if you need it. But do try and hike down, it is a great workout. Take day hikes along the river which lead all the way to the Grand Canyon. If you don't want to hike back out (and up!) be sure to check if and when the helicopters will be running. It is only a 5 minute ride, but well worth the cost. My dog even got to fly for free! Do not bring alcohol onto the Reservation. Always check their website before heading out, as floods do occur there and can be very dangerous. Feb 11, 2009 Such a beautiful and special place! Holly hit the head on the nail with her review! The hike down is 8 miles to the village. The steepest part is the first two miles descending from the parking lot. The village has a few convenience stores with water, ice, milk, bread, etc. even ice cream. Prices are high though so pack in what you can. Then its another 2 miles to the campground, and you are greeted by Havasu Falls. The campground fills up fast so the earlier you get there, the better. There are bathrooms and a running spicket for water which is ok to fill up your water bottle and drink from. Make sure your meals are not too messy- they don't have trash cans at the campground so you have to bring your trash to the village or back up the canyon when you leave. The helicopter option is a great and speedy way to get in and out. But it only flies 3 or 4 days a week. Check with the tribe to find out when it is scheduled to fly. Cost about $85pp. I recommend hiking up and down. If you have anything heavier than a backpack rent a mule for $75. The mule can carry up to 4 medium sized packs or luggage. Jun 27, 2009 beautiful, quiet, a great hike through narrow canyons. let the Supai take your gear down on horseback. was there in 2005 and not since the flood. side canyons to explore. the travertine dams and turquoise water through the campground is relaxing and the frogs croaking at night to put you to sleep.
