Well now, my favourite place in Phoenix isn't IN Phoenix... It is about a two hour drive, plus, up into the mountains, yes a truly beautiful drive, to a beautiful place called Sedona.

When I got there finally, it was late. Very late. So late that I could barely see these huge, red, rainwater-etched mountains. They were cathedra-like and being in this area is akin to a religious experience.

So don't arrive late! God will getcha!

I knew I had to stay, so, even though I had a budget five star resort booked in Scottsdale Arizona, home of some hefty PGA Golf Tournaments and lots of rich guys and dolls, I forked out another $45 and got a room up in Sedona. All by myself, with a libido, a fireplace, the stillness in the air and nobody around but me. Yes nobody around but me. Nobody around but me...

Did I say that there was nobody around really, except me? Yes I suppose I did. UP there in the beautiful mountains, with the cool elevation air, a fireplace and my own romantic heart, I had the best room in the goddamned motel. Not many people around in January, I guess. The propane flames in the fireplace warmed the cabin and I stared out into the silent night. It was a bit of heaven.

However, I do not prefer to travel alone. This I discovered with that $1500 pass to fly anywhere in North America on a Saturday, Sunday or Tuesday with Air Canada. Good for three months. Good for someone who has money, but I didn't. Good for putting a guy in a hole still crammed with debt 18 months later.

But I am never one to complain. After I have bitched a bit. So I will dig myself out.

All I can say is go to Sedona. Plan to stay up there a night and two days. That little motel, on the northeast corner of some four corners part of Sedona, I booked as an internet special. In fact, I booked it in my car, on my computer, floating through someone else's isp signal on my new laptop. But it worked, and saved me a bundle.

Take lots of film. Ask the locals what to see. Do not miss the church, carved right into the mountain, at some site along a hillside in Sedona. Behind the altar are clear windows where you can see through to the heavenly view of this gigantic, spiritual, magnificent place: Sedona. JB

Sedona is a laid back artsy town nestled amid a beautiful southwestern backdrop. Summer days are hot and dry while nighttime cools off. Watch out for thunderstorms and be sure to dine at My Big Fat Greek Restaurant.
