Actually this is a dried up lake bottom. It looks like Mars. (It really does.) But there is water not far below the surface. It was named Death Valley because some folks crossing it died of thirst. The odd thing is that they only had to dig a few feet to find water where they died. There is also special salt water tolerant fish that live in the Valley. I once visited it on New Year's Day, and found that barriers had just been taken down. There had been a flooding problem just a few days ago.

It is a common misconception that nothing (plant or animal) lives in the desert. In fact there are so many beautiful forms of life out there that are quite breathtaking! Add to that the amazing geological aspects of this area... mindblowing.

I strongly recommend that if you are visiting Death Valley (which is AMAZING) you also try to check out Fossil Falls, Red Rock Canyon, and the Trona Pinacles.

who said there was no way to enjoy Hell? thats the first impression that this place gave me! i was simply in Hell on Earth, 50° C, no way to get any shade, no way to sit on teh boiling bottom... even our fear to break our overloaded van down didnt take our fun away, i would go back there without any hesitation. maybe id love to try a cooler time of the year though.

If it is a big rain year get out there in March and April and the wildflowers are amazing. You will also beat the heat and be able to do some hiking without dieing.
