Description:
Created in 1916, the San Diego Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the world, with over 4,00 animals and over 800 separate species, including an African rain forest exhibit with gorillas, a Taiga and Tundra area featuring polar bears, and other areas including Pandas, Rhinos, Koalas and more.  The zoo follows the philosophy of "cageless exhibits", preferring to recreate as much as possible each animals' natural environment.

Among the attractions at the zoo, outside of the animals are the Guided Bus Tour, a 35 minute double decker bus ride that covers 75% of the zoo, a Skyfari Aerial tram that offers a good birds-eye view of the complex, the Balboa Park Miniature Railroad, the ENTCO Wild Earth Safari Ride, the Sea Lion Show, and other seasonal and special exhibits.

The zoo is run by the Zoological society of San Diego.
Getting there:
By Bus The Zoo is on the #7 bus line, which runs between downtown San Diego and East San Diego and La Mesa. From downtown: Take any outbound #7 bus. The bus will travel north on Park Blvd. to a stop at Zoo Place.

I have not really seen it, but it is a very important genetic stop on the ark-trail of species preservation for Planet Earth. I think there is a Marine World or something else like that here... Don't rent a car and drive into Mexico. Don't RENT A CAR in Mexico. The girl is renting it to you there, and her brothers will follow you to where you park it for the night. If they wait that long. You are only insured for something like half or two-thirds. Mexico and Napoleonic Law: you are guilty until proven innocent. Or in the slammer till Daddy pays for the Hummer (that they stole from you). Take a train. Take a cab. Take a plane...

If you love animals, and don't want to get board. Take the fam to the zoo in San Diego. From what I understand, it is the biggest in the us. Not only will you have some thing to do all day long, but the kids will be nice and tired early on in the evening, so the adults will have time to enjoy the night life. Heck, you and your family just might have someting to do the next day. That is just how big the zoo is.

The San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, San Diego, California is one of the largest, most progressive zoos in the world with over 4,000 animals of more than 800 species. It is privately operated by the nonprofit Zoological Society of San Diego on 100 acres (0.40 km2)of parkland leased from the City of San Diego, and ownership of allanimals, equipment and other assets rests with the City of San Diego.

Frankly, I don't understand what the hype is all about the San Diego Zoo. Yes, it is large in size and has a lot of species and plants, however for the exception of several exhibits, our family found it quite boring. My son was 6 at the time and loved going to our local zoo (Portland, Oregon), but after an hour at the San Diego Zoo said that he is bored and doesn't want to be there. :-(

The San Diego Zoo was amazing! It has been awhile since my last visit, but it was a lot of fun. They still had a live two-headed snake when I last visited as well as many animals that I will probably never get a chance to see anywhere else. Of course you do have to learn a little on the trip through the park, but I won't hold that against them.

This Zoo is wonderful! The warm, sunny weather will easily comfort you at this wonderful zoo. We opted to walk the park and not pay the extra money for a bus ride. You can see everything, just study the map and figure out the best route. The panda's are worth to go through as many times as possible:) Bring your own water in a backpack :)

The experience of the San Diego Zoo is a priceless!  I've been twice and will visit again when I'm anywhere close.  So many beautiful animals, wonderful grounds and hills for an active day.  The Panda mother and cubs were my favorite and reminded me so much of children rolling around in the grass playing.

No wonder they call it one of the best Zoo's in the world. I had the best time there (it was 8 years ago but hey - I'm sure it's still just as good!) Loved the baby panda, and the mum and dad (I think it was the first one bred in captivity in the Zoo) It was definitely the highlight though!

There is just so much to see and do at the San Diego Zoo that I don't think you could ever go wrong. The grounds seemed to be really clean and nice and my entire family enjoyed their time there. I definitely suggest people head there if they are in San Diego.
