Prison
Sanctuary
Alcatraz Island initially served as a lighthouse, then a military fortification, a military prison and finally a federal prison until 1963.  It has since become a national recreation area and is now a historic site open to visitors, with tours of the infamous prison offering a glimpse into prison life for part inmates on the island.

Alcatraz Island was a bright spot in my first trip to San Francisco. I was able to see the seals at Fishermans Wharf, golf at Golden Gate Park, drive down Lombard Street, visit Haight/Ashbury, etc etc...The audio tour for Alcatraz Island was fantastic and far exceeded my expectations. The boat ride over had great views of the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate. Once on the island things were organized and our guides were friendly. I won't spoil the audio tour for you but its a must when visiting the area.

I went to Alcatraz when I was 8 but I can totally remember how spooky it was! That prison definitely has a lot of negative energy, obviously. There were some cold spots as well although this is probably due to the old architecture. It is rumored to be haunted by Al Capone's ghost, among many others. A cool place to visit if you want to try and a taste of the supernatural. And even if you don't, you will surely feel that the prison has a bad vibe!

The prison audio guide is really interesting and informative. I think the tour is much more engaging with this guide. There are also nice views from the island. I didn't find the prison scary at all but if you can put yourself in there and really think what it must have been like when the doors were locked and there weren't a bunch of tourists with headphones walking around then it would be much more frightening. or at least depressing.

This is the best place and most interesting place ever!! My fam and I did the tour with head phones in the day light and it was so interseting and at some points scary!! They have the same tour with headphones but its at night!! I will do that next time!! :) If you're gonna go there, you HAVE to do the tour with the headphones!! Plus, you have to touch and look and do what ever they tell you to do!! You'll love it!

If you make the journey to San francisco you simply must make the trip over to Alcatraz. Book your tickets well in advance as there are limited tour spots. It will cost you around 70 USD but when else will you have the chance to walk in the same footsteps as the most infamous characters in US history. After the boat brings ya back stop and have a bowl of chowder at the fisherman's wharf.
