Muir Woods has a rich and varied history, from its use by the Coast Miwok people, to its early days of tourism, to an era of conservation, to modern preservation. In each era, the forest has been affected by the actions of humans, for better or for worse.

Located 11 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Take Highway 101 to the Highway 1/ Stinson Beach Exit. Follow the signs to Muir Woods.

The 'ancient forest' at Muir Woods was really impressive to me because of the size of the trees. I haven't explored much of the west coast, so I wasn't used to seeing such huge trees, the redwoods were amazing. As a bonus I saw three deer within 5 minutes of heading out on one of the trails. Once you get away from the main parking area, you can enjoy the quiet peacefulness of the forest. Great spot so close to San Fran!

I love nature and so I loved those trees... amazingly tall and proud. Its a special magical silence in that redwood forest what made me humble... It remind me on the giant Kauri I've seen in New Zealand. Another plus is the short distance to San Francisco.
