Half Dome and Yosemite are amazing. It is a long, strenous hike. Even if you can make it to the top, your knees will quiver and ache as you make the steep, rocky descent. Instead, I would reccomend that you backpack from the Toulomne Meadows area and take the side-trail to the back of half-dome, and then finish off by heading down into the valley for dinner and camp in one of the many public sites or stay in a YURT.

Also, you can always take the YARTS shuttle back to Toulomne if you have a vehicle there.

fabulous hike to the top of Half Dome from the visitor centre : strenuous walk , 10 hours round trip , but absolutely great. the last part you climb the half dome holding two steel cables - a little scary when you look up, but not difficult at all.

i love it... be sure to hike to the top of it, the best is to get back country permit and sleep half way there to be early at the ropes, that way no tourist queue!

Go to Glacia point and look over to the Half Dome this view will give you some idea of scale of the thing, then head down to the Valley floor and start your climb of the half dome.

Nice place to go to even if you don't make it all the way to the top. Great View, and a lot of fun for those who like the outdoors. =)
