The Coors Brewery in Golden Colorado was originally founded in 1873 by Adolph Coors and Jacob Schueler. Golden was selected as the location because of the abundance of fresh rocky mountain water in the area. In 1880, Mr. Coors bought out his partner and ran the company until Prohibition started in 1916. While most breweries were forced to shut down, Mr. Coors got creative and began producing things like malted milk in order to keep the brewery running. Most brewers weren’t so lucky, and by the time Prohibition ended in 1933 less than half of the 1500+ breweries that had existed previously were able to reopen. It was because of this that Coors truly took off. In 2005, Coors merged with Molson, a Canadian brewing company, and the newly formed Molson Coors Brewing Company became the fifth largest brewer in the world and the third largest in the USA . In addition to brewing Coors and Coors Light, the Golden brewery also produces Molson, Killian’s Irish Red, Blue Moon, Zima, non-alcoholic beer, and other seasonal products.

Free brewery tours are available Monday through Saturday and end with a stop in the saloon, where patrons over the age of 21 can try the various products on tap.

A great tour and an easy way to spend an afternoon! The university in Golden seems to be pretty idealy located, just down the road from the brewery...no wonder we saw dozens of students heading into the brewery while we were there and heading straight for the lounge! Three free beer a day isn't a bad deal! :)
