Part of the Smithsonian Museums, the National Museum of American History collects and preserves more than 3 million artifacts.  On display are exhibits that document and offer glimpses of American life from the War of Independence to present life.  You'll find the original Star Spangled Banner, Dorthy's ruby slippers from the "Wizard of Oz", a look at various American presidencies and more.

Currently closed for renovation (open Nov 21, 2008, go to http://www.si.edu/ for more info). Interesting museum. My favorite parts were the renovations of the Star Spangled Banner and the 1st ladies outfits. Free museum, but very well done, as are all the other Smithsonian museums.

Love it. Have always loved American History. No matter how many times I got to it I never get bored. There is always something new.

First floor was my favorite - technology and science. I was there before the renovation, I'm sure it looks better now.

I was there in 1968 I sure that they have added some new stuff since then but it was well worth the vist.
