I loved going to the Smithsonian museums. One of the best aspects is they are free, so it's something you can save money on while enjoying. They also house so many different displays that everyone can be entertained. Since it doesn't cater to one specific type of person (meaning it isn't just art or artifacts, etc.), everyone can do their own thing while exploring American culture.

One of Washington's best features is all the free stuff, including the world class Smithsonian museums. Definitely check out the National Gallery, the Natural History Museum, the American History Museum, and the Air and Space. But don't forget some of the smaller museums either, if they're about topics in which your interested.

i visit at least one of the museums EVERY TIME i go to DC. these museums are amazing! and they are totally FREE! my favorite ones are the museum of american history, the museum of african art, and the very new museum of the american indian (which includes info on native populations in the whole continent, not just the US!).

So much to do and see - ask for a behind the scenes tour, feels like you are in a movie! My fave is the nautral history museum, but you should check out the Holocaust museum too - very good as well! Walk across the mall to the air and space museum and grab some astronaut ice cream!

Something for everyone.  You could spend days going through these museums and still not see it all. Especially great when it is so humid in D.C. that you need to escape to the air-conditioning!!

They have something for everyone. My favorite section is the Dinosaur fossils and the gem and mineral exhibit. They have the "cursed" Hope Diamond.
