Founded by British Scientist James Smithson (who never actually visited the US), the Smithsonian Institute's goal is to increase the diffusion of knowledge.  They operate the Smithsonian Museums (about 20) which cover a arange of topics from Arts and Industry to Sculpture, Air and Space to American History.

Something for everyone.  You could spend days going through these museums and still not see it all. Especially great when it is so humid in D.C. that you need to escape to the air-conditioning!!

As a young man living in Maryland, I had the opportunity to explore the Smithsonisan Museums almost ever weekend for about a year. These experiences were some of the best of my life. I found the museums to contain more information than I could possibly take-in during many lifetimes. I have been back to the museums many times since then and have introduced my children to these great museums. I highly recommend each of the museums. A weekend is enough time for one or two museums. If you want to see them all, plan at least a week, but to really enjoy the museums, plan to see them over a lifetime. Good journeys!

I loved going to the Smithsonian museums. One of the best aspects is they are free, so it's something you can save money on while enjoying. They also house so many different displays that everyone can be entertained. Since it doesn't cater to one specific type of person (meaning it isn't just art or artifacts, etc.), everyone can do their own thing while exploring American culture.

A lot of my friends visit and say, "The museums here are free???" Yes they are. With the way the economy is, I always try to visit the museums even when I'm not playing tour guide. We can never be too sure if our museums will start charging soon too. Right after Inauguration, I visited the First Ladies' exhibition to see Michele Obama's dress :)

One of Washington's best features is all the free stuff, including the world class Smithsonian museums. Definitely check out the National Gallery, the Natural History Museum, the American History Museum, and the Air and Space. But don't forget some of the smaller museums either, if they're about topics in which your interested.
