Waimea Canyon
About Waimea Canyon
Dubbed "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific" by Mark Twain (though disputed whether he actually saw it himself or not), the Waimea Canyon is the largest canyon in the Pacific Ocean. It stretches 10 miles long (16km), about 1 mile wide at its widest, and is over 3,000 feet deep (900 metres). It was formed by an incision of the Waimea River flowing from Mount Wai'ale'ale, one of the wettest places on earth.
Numerous lookout points along a road that winds its way along the crest of the canyon gives you an ample sense of its grandeur. Alternatively, a helicopter ride can take you right within. Waimea Canyon is located within the Waimea Canyon State Park. Within the area are numerous hiking trails. It is also popular with ATV vehicles. Payment Accepted:

Sep 7, 2007 It was cool. But was it worth trying to drive there on multiple occasions in hopes that the bleeping fog would lift so that we could just see the sights? At 40 miles round trip...I dunno. But the sunset views were pretty spectacular, and there were a lot of lookouts points...and it's not like I can visit the place like it's in my backyard. If you have time though, I recommend allocating some days to hiking the trails. I'm sure that experience would have beat sitting in a rental car and hopping out at "lookout points." Jun 2, 2009 Kauai's Waimea Canyon is picture perfect with vibrant red and verdant green ridges and ravines interrupted by cascading waterfalls. Keep driving through Koke'e State Park until you near the end of the road; pull over at the Kalalau Lookout for the most gorgeous view you will see on Kauai - nestled between emerald cliffs, the Kalalau Valley stretches far below you to meet the Pacific Ocean. Be sure to go on a clear day and arrive in the morning to avoid the mist that often obscures this view. Sep 3, 2007 This ended up being a favoured destination of ours. You'll definitely want to get there in the AM before the clouds roll in because when they do, you can't see 20 feet over the railing. When they part however, you've got some incredible vistas on each side of the ridge. Budget some time though because it's out of the way and the 20 miles to the end of the road take a loong time. Nov 15, 2010 I love the hawaiian islands and everything there is worth a check out ... but it is expensive and touristy as heck.
