The Middle Fork of the Salmon River flows through the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area.  At 1.2 million  acres it's the biggest in the lower 48 states. This is wild and pristine America and the river is the finest alpine wilderness river trip there is.  You can raft or kayak it on your own if you have the skill and gear and get a permit from the US Forest Service. Or you can go with an outfitter that provides everything.  In terms of an experiential, authentic vacation in the American West, it doesn't get any better.  Along the way there are hot springs, great hiking trails, Indian rock art, pioneer homesteads, superb catch-and-release fishing for cutthroat  trout and fun whitewater.  The river drops from 6000' to 3000' over 100 miles so you travel through several ecosystems.  Most trips start near Stanley, Idaho.

For people that love nature as I do, it doesn't get any better than this!
