If you are ever crossing the Mississipi River on I-20 and have the time, exit and go see this battlefield. The combination of Gettysburg and the surrender of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 are considered by many historians to be the battles that sealed the fate of the south. After the Union seized this city, the North had undisputed control of the entire Mississippi shipping lane. This effectively cut the South in half and cut off supplies and reinforcements to and from the west.
