Feb 23, 2009 If you are ever crossing the Mississipi River on I-20 and have the time, exit and go see this battlefield. The combination of Gettysburg and the surrender of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 are considered by many historians to be the battles that sealed the fate of the south. After the Union seized this city, the North had undisputed control of the entire Mississippi shipping lane. This effectively cut the South in half and cut off supplies and reinforcements to and from the west. Sep 9, 2008 An amazing tour, you drive through miles of battle grounds with "checkpoints" along the way. Each "stop allows you to park get out and go explore things like monuments, battlefeild reproductions, brilliant statues, trenches, and other amazing civil war era furnishments, also an awesome gift shop where you can look up your family records and see which side your family was on, what state they fought for, you can even buy a commemrative plaque!!!!
