The ruins at Aztec are related to the better-known sites at Chaco Canyon, somewhat smaller but very well-preserved. They were old when the Aztec empire fell, and I may as well point out that they actually had nothing to do with the Aztecs, but were built by the Anasazi/ancestral Puebloan culture. The ruins include several kivas (underground, circular buildings of worship) and large buildings that are assumed to have housed many families each.
