Jan 14, 2010 I had always been a fan of Civil War History, so when I was at a training school in Virginia and had a 3 day weekend, I had to see Gettysburg! I got out early in the morning after dropping a friend off at the airport in Philadelphia and was on the road before daybreak with a light snow. At the time I was living in Miami so I didn't have the foresight to bring warm clothes with me. The snow stopped before I got to the park but the cold wind still chilled my bones. It was all worth it. I spent the better part of the day following the driving tour, and stopping to inspect the views from various hills and vantage points I had only read about in books. I felt a truly amazing sense of appreciation for the men who died there fighting for their beliefs. It was neat to see some of the old trees riddle with bullet holes way up high. The stories they could tell... I don't know how busy the park is regularly or if the cold kept people away but it was empty. I got to enjoy almost every bit of it in solitude. A must see for any history buff.
