Feb 10, 2009 One of the top hikes in the United States! You want to be in good shape or at least an active person if you are to do this hike. It is an overall steep hike and gets steeper towards the top. The last half mile is part hiking and part rock climbing. No worries though, because a linked chain is there for support in tough areas. There is an obvious middle point where it becomes sand at the top of Walter's Wiggles. If you are afraid of heights, stop there and head back down. Once you get to the very top, after the chains part, your reward is a breathtaking 360 degree view of the park. I recommend staying at the top for a good half hour to soak it all in. Out of all the places I've hiked and hikers I've talked to, everyone who has done it has a special memory of this incredible hike. Here's a tip: in the summertime I always start the hike in the afternoon, about 4pm. Reason being is that now you are in the shade for the majority of the hike up. It makes a huge difference when tackling this beast.
