I currently work in Alexandria, VA. There is a couple of nice restaurants on King Street; the restaurants are metro accessible. Alexandria is only 15 minutes away from Washington D.C.'s memorials. If visiting DC, this might be the place to stay. You will end up paying less for hotels, than you would pay to stay within the DC limits.

I live there. It's awesome. Plenty of bars, shopping, sights, and history. It can be expensive, but it's still a great place to walk around for a weekend. Make sure to check out the Torpedo Factory, from which you can walk right out onto the Potomac River.
