One of the biggest street markets in the region, the Bac Ha Sunday Market is both a gathering place for the Vietnamese Minority Group and a place for them to shop.  Traditionally dressed women are here shopping for skirts and embroidery with elaborate floral motifs.  This sprawling market features numerous street food items, fresh produce and meats, arts and crafts, costumes for the minority groups, a livestock trading area and various live animals including pigs, chickens, dogs, horses and water buffalo.

When I learned that getting here would take 3 hours, I seriously questioned whether it was worth it. I'm so glad I went in the end as it was quite a sight - endless stalls of colourful tapestries and costumes, new and fragrant herbs, fruits, vegetables, and all manner of meat. I smelled way-powerful 40 proof corn based moonshine served out of giant oil bottles, saw the live water buffalo market where locals peered into the teeth to check health of the Buffalo and spent hours trying to take it all in. I've been told it's gotten more and more touristy in recent years, and the inevitable call to buy by vendors is there at the crafts stands, but what's great is that at least the locals have gotten oblivious to the tourists so you can walk around and just watch as these groups get together to share food, catch up and laugh without feeling TOO much like you're interfering. When bargaining, be sure to at least ask for a 30% discount (probably upwards of 50% if you're good), and don't be afraid to walk away if you don't like the price. Bargaining will be done over a calculator.
