Description:
Ha Long Bay, which means "Bay of the Descending Dragon", is one of the bays located within the Gulf of Tonkin. It is one of the most picturesque destinations in the world, featuring a dense cluster of over 1,969 limestone pillar-like islands topped with jungle vegetation, and schist islands situated in a 1,500 square kilometre bay. Of the islands, 989 of them have been given names. Most of the islands are uninhabited, allowing the region to preserve its natural beauty. The best way to visit the area is through scenic boat rides.

We spent a full day and a night on a boat and had a wonderful time. The scenery is just beautiful and you can get away from the busy towns in Vietnam. Time just seems to stand still for a moment while you are enjoying the scenery, take a swim in the water (watch out for the jellyfishes!) or rent a kajak and explore the little caves on your own. The food we got on the boat was just delicious and I would recommend to everybody to take the time to visit this cultural heritage.

It's one of the most magnificent natural wonders of the world with Spectacular Views of Lime Stone Hills Scattered all around at sea. You can stay in a boat or Junk and live at sea to experience the wonders of Ha Long Bay. The Junk boat stay is a relaxing one coupled with great seafood other interesting activities (Kayaking, Swimming, etc.). If you want a truly relaxing holiday away from your busy life, this is definitely a great place to go.

The bay is really pretty, however it is starting to be overwhelmed with trash. Also, they require all the tour boats to park in the same area at night...I would NOT go swimming there!! The men on our boat told us there is more poo than fish in the water, as all the toilets drain into the bay. However a kayaking trip which goes a little out of the normal tourist range is well worth effort.

This was one of my favourite places in Vietnam. We did an overnight cruise on the bay and it was just amazing. Seriously one of the best things we did. Plus if you're brave enough (or silly enough in the middle of winter like we were!) to swim at night there is amazing phosphorescence which is kind of like swimming through magic. Sounds silly I know but in reality it's amazing!

Rent a boat, sail to the middle of the islands, kayak into one of the grottoes, and find yourself in the middle of a mountainous atoll - it's incredibly silent, peaceful, until a flock of birds or insects took flight and their wings sound an orchestra while you're flat at your back in the kayak, watching the sky framed by the greens of the towering hills.

I spent the better part of two days on a slow boat in the bay. We had great weather and wonderful views of small little islands. Kayaking, swimming and climbing in the wonderous caves were where we spent most of our time. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is heading to Vietnam...Watch out for jellyfish while swimming :)

A beautiful natural wonder and something, in my opinion, you cannot do in just one day. I did a 2 night 3day trip and stayed on Cat Ba Island, which was great. The kayaking was really amazing too. The only sad thing is the amount of pollution in the water

Halong Bay was just divine - I went with michele, and like she says we spent a day and a night there... best night of the trip I guess! Food was lovely - so much choice! The views were spectacular. Definately a must see!

There are boats that do day trips to the cave, but the best part is if, rather than stay in a hotel, you stay on the boat overnight. Sleeping on a boat under the big sky was the most peaceful night of my life.
