Buck Island Reef National Monument
About Buck Island Reef National Monument
The Buck Island Reef National Monument is the most popular attraction on St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. Established in 1961, this park is one of the best marine gardens in the Caribbean, and consists of a 176 acre island that is in the middle of the 880 acre marine sanctuary. The elkhorn coral barrier reef that surrounds a majority of the island is known for its outstanding formations and excellent array of reef fishes. There are also animals such as the hawksbill turtle, least tern, and brown pelican residing on or around the island. There is a marked underwater trail at the easternmost part of the reef that offers excellent snorkelling (or shallow diving) opportunities through the reef. Hikers can enjoy the native animals and flowers and make their way to the great views at the observation point. There are also protected beaches with facilities and cooking grills.
