Pierre Chanel (Petelo Sanele) Church is named after the patron saint of Oceania and is a tall structure that towers around the surrounding buildings.   Pierre Chanel became the first martyr of Oceania when he was clubbed to death on Futuna in 1841.  His martyrdom resulted in most of the island converting to Catholicism over the next few years.

The church is large enough to hold a few hundred worshipers and contains a number of relics, including Pierre Chanel’s clothes and the club that was used to kill him.  There is also a large statue of Chanel at the entrance to the church.
