Luangwa Valley

Description:
Situated at the end of the Great Rift Valley, Luangwa Valley is considered one of Africa's greatest wildlife sanctuaries.  It is framed by the Muchinga Mountains on one side, Lake Malawai on the other side, and bisected by the Luangwa River, offering an incredibly diverse terrain.  The Luangwa River is rich with silt deposits that cause the river to change course frequently, forming "ox bow" lagoons, which are an important ecological feature.

Within the Valley are North Luangwa National Park, and South Luangwa National Park, which are separated by a 30km Munyamadzi corridor.  Luambe, a smaller, yet undeveloped park lies nearby.

Within the game parks are a wild array of animals, from the rare black rhino to the big 5.  Bird lovers will also find much to see here.
Getting there:
By Air
Chartered flights are regularly available from Lusaka.

By Road
From Chipata, the 123km ride takes about two hours to Mfuwe.

From Mpika, the Great North Road near Zambia's eastern border is a road running down the Munyamadzi corridor.

The Luangwa Valley is very impressive. We visited South Lungwa and saw herds of elephants as well as gazelle and other animals crossing the Luangwa river. Saw numerous species in the Luangwa valley (South Luagwa) that we did not see in Tanzania, Botswana, Kenya or anywhere else, including cobra and bush babies for smaller animals. The only thing I did not like was that hunting is permitted in the more northern parts of the valley and we ran into some people who had no respect for the wildlife. (Not because they were hunters, but because they teased the animals such as Elephants.)
