The granite boulders contain some of the highest concentrations of rock art in Africa, including depictions such as running, playing, hunting and dancing, ancient species of birds, and trees. Some of the boulder peaks, including Shumba, Shaba and Shumba Sham, are considered sacred by locals. Matobo hills are the burial site of Mzilikazi, the founder of the Ndebele nation. His tomb and his belongings are sealed in the region. He referred to the area as "amaTobo", or "bald heads." The region is also the burial place of Cecil John Rhodes, founder of the British South African Company , of the diamond company De Beers, and creator of the Rhodes Scholarship. His remains are located in a granite formation called World's View. Matobo National Park is also home to huge number of multi-coloured lizards, large number of snake species including the black mamba, as well as large concentrations of black eagles, Wahlberg's eagles, tawny eagles, falcons, and more. In the wooded valleys and marshlands live wildlife such as the white and black rhinos, baboons, monkeys, leopards, impalas, and more. Matobo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. By road
Take the A47 south-west from Bulawayo Zimbabwe. The hills are about 32km along a road.
