Ilha do Catimbau
About Ilha do Catimbau
While Ilha do Catimbau (Catimbau Island) is technically an entire island I've listed it as a restauraunt because it is basically just a cluster of rocks with a restauraunt on it (it's sole attraction).

Oct 30, 2008 Every time I visit my Mother's hometown of Paraty I have to go here. While the food is excellent (oddly enough, the best bruschetta I have ever had- including Italy) it is the location and ambience of the place that wins me over. The entire restaurant is open, including the kitchen. In fact, the only semblance of walls are the giant rocks formations that make up the island. The wooden patio and rope bridges (which composes the only ground on the island) are wedged between the giant boulders, creating a very Swiss Family Robinson vibe, if you ask me. There are only a few tables which are entirely located on said wooden patio but I find this a benefit, rather than a deterrant. In true Brazilian style, this quaint size allows the owners/cooks to mingle with you and join you in a drink or two. What's more, off the wooden balcony there are steps that walk you directly into the ocean (no beach, just water). It's SUPER casual (most diners enjoy thier seafood in bathing suits) and you are encouraged to jump right off the patio into the ocean while waiting for your food (which, truth be told, sometimes takes a while). Besides the aforementioned bruschetta I highly recommend the octopus and squid- the best I 've had!
