Sawasdee Thai Restaurant is known as the oldest Thai restaurant in Vancouver and has been around for nearly 25 years.  Located in a tastefully decorated but fairly plain room, Sawasdee has gained a reputation for consistently good Thai food.  House specialties include the Crying Tiger Beef (sliced marinated grilled beef with hot sauce), although there is a large selection of dishes that would probably satisfy most customers.

Figure on around $20 per person including tax and tip (without alcohol).

The Thai food at Sawasdee is quite good. We had four dishes for a party of four, plus two coconut rices and two Thai iced teas, and it came out to around $80 including tax and tip. That was enough food to fill us up and have some leftovers remaining. I can't actually spell the dishes we had properly, except for the Penang Fish Curry, but the dishes appeared to be of a consistently good quality, so you can probably just decide based on your own tastes.

We're not very spice tolerant, so we found that medium hotness was actually fairly hot for our tastes. If you don't like spicy foods, ask for mild.

There are a lot of thai places near my house, and I generally like to cook thai at home, so I had high expectations of this place.

Nothing totally blew my mind, but every dish was well prepared and tasty at reasonable prices ($9.95 - $13.95 for most dishes). We ordered a stir-fry squid dish, a stir-fry noodle dish, panang curry with fish and a vegetable curry dish. I liked them all quite well. Only caveat about the place I would say is that the medium was MUCH spicier than I thought, so order with caution! Overall a good place to go if you're in Vancouver and craving thai.

For some reason, there is a huge concentration of Thai restaurants around where I live, so I've had my share. None of them are particularly amazing (though some are certainly far better than others) so I'm always up for checking out a new Thai place. If Sawasdee was local, it would be my new favorite. Great, fast service with very good food. I got the Penang Curry (fish) Medium, which I found juuust a bit warm for me. Thai ice tea was good, even in the dead of winter :)
