Here's what Lonely Planet has to say about the Night Market: "A sight in itself, the bustling night market near Wangfujing Dajie is a food zoo: lamb kebabs, beef and chicken skewers, corn on the cob, chou doufu (smelly tofu), cicadas, grasshoppers, kidneys, quail's eggs, squid, fruit, porridge, fried pancakes, strawberry kebabs, bananas, Inner Mongolian cheese, stuffed aubergines, chicken hearts, pitta bread stuffed with meat, shrimps - and that's just for starters. It's for tourists, not locals, so expect to pay around Y5 for a lamb kebab (much more than you would from a hutong vendor)."
Payment Accepted:
Getting there:
From the front gate of the Forbidden City walk East, and turn left on the second major street you come to. The night market is a few blocks up on the right hand side.

We stumbled on the night market on our way back to our hostel one night and it was a lot of fun to check everything out! There's a lot of tasty things (loooooved the sweet potatoes and the deep fried pancakes), and some things that I couldn't ever imagine eating, but it was fun to see anyway! I almost ate a scorpion, but decided to wait until next time instead! :) It is definitely for tourists, but it's a chance to see a lot of food options that most westerners wouldn't normally come across in the city. Head to the hutongs if you want better prices, but this has everything all in one place if you just want to have a look.

Sampling all the odd eats was a great experience. Tried them all, scorpion, centipedes, beetle cocoons, sea horses, silk worms, starfish (eat the delicious meat from the inside, not the hard shell), etc. Some were very good, others just interesting but tasteless (like anything deep friend). I've been chasing exotic food all around the world for the last 25 years, so there are few things I haven't eaten yet, but only two I refuse to do - durian and stinky tofu. Now those are really gross.
