f ever you get a little tired of backpacking, and you manage to score some extra cash, I suggest treating yourself to an adventure resort like the Gamboa Rainforest Resort, if only for a long weekend. The GAMBOA RAINFOREST RESORT offers any non beach-bum needing a break, an all inclusive package fit for kings, filled with nature activities ( some included, some optional ), good food ( although not very local ), spa treatments and breathtaking views. Located only 40 minutes outside of Panama City, it is a great haven that juxtaposes urban fun with jungle frolics.
The resort itself houses a butterfly house, fresh-water life exhibit, an orchid nursery and a serpentarium. heir on site guides provide free of charge nature tours as well as ( pricey ) adventure half-day trips. Of these, the AERIAL TRAM is the most popular. A guide will take you through the trees explaining everything (flora and fauna) as you cruise along. Try to sign up for the evening tour as it is the best to see animals. Not to miss is the MONKEY ISLAND TOUR . Bring along bananas or grapes and the capuchin monkeys will (literally) jump onto your boat and steal them right out of your hands!
A NIGHT SAFARI offers a private boat ride at night in search of crocodiles, capybara and caimans. The bats flying over your head and the tranquil dark waters of Lake Gatun make this tour particularly spooky. As for the hotel itself, the staff is very friendly and helpful. Wake up early to take a dip in the pool that overlooks the jungle, or just relax on your personal hammock. When time to eat, the CHAGRES RIVERVIEW RESTAURANT offers fine dining in a romantic setting with elaborately put together desserts. If possible try all of the appetizers... they are all fantastic!
Overall, it is recommended to stay for an extended weekend (4 days) at the resort to pack everything in and take in the beauty that surrounds you. A longer stay will show that nightlife is a little dull and that cravings for authentic local food will take over your desires. If that's what your into, of course.

If you're staying in Panama City and want to immerse yourself in a more natural setting, head to Gamboa which will transport you into the rainforest. The accommodations and service are both excellent and there is a variety of activities to do. I did the zip line and really enjoyed it.
