It's good for when you want food late at night.  Food is excellent & cheap, but there are houseflies and other bugs that come with the territory in the tropics.
Payment Accepted:
Getting there:
From Orchard Road MRT, take the N-S line one stop north to Newton MRT.  Get off and follow the signs.

If you want to try all the local Singapore cuisine in one place and would prefer cheaper prices this is the place to go - Newton Circus. It is easy to find (as it is only a stone's throw from Orchard Road) and you find almost all the local delicacies that popular in Singapore. Yes yes there plenty of these hawker stalls in Singapore as they are the icon of Singapore eatery but Newton Circus is one of the first and oldest ones. My primary school was across the road from this Hawker Stall (until they moved it). I know it from the day it was established - I had friends who's mothers used to own food stalls there and I have seen it grow to a tourist attraction it is now. I remember eating there every day after school. A glass of freshly squeezed sugar-cane juice and nasi lemak costed me S$1 altogether. That was 36 years ago. As time went by it grew popular with the tourists. My husband began his stag meal with his mates from England there and almost had a full blown meal fight. The food was so cheap nearly 29 years ago that they became reckless with food. Another 10 years later the place got abit too popular, the stall holders started getting arrogant and charging exorbitant prices for each plate (sometimes even more than a hotel restaurant would charge) but still tourist pay for it. Then one day the authorities got more complaints from tourists and locals alike, about the arrogance, rudeness and complacency of the stall owners. A couple of years ago the government came down hard on the guilty parties, kicked many out but not without slapping a hefty fine on them first. Now I can assure you order is restored and Newton Circus has humbled and an honest place it once way. Why would you go to Newton Circus? Well the food is cheaper (no longer the cheapest) and the advantage is the ingredients are fresh and cooked or squeezed in front of you within minutes. For example chilli crabs, crispy baby squid, steamed garoupa fish, sugar cane, star fruit juice (many selections of fruit juice on offer), ice-kachang (shredded ice with a multi-coloured syrup sprinkled on top and hiding underneath all that ice are gum-fruit, red bean jelly. You can even find steak, nasi lemak, rojak, sop kaki, etc, etc, etc. Want to what they are - then go there and try them. You will not regret it. By all means try other stalls - they are many many all around Singapore. That is part of their culture i.e. to eat at these hawker stalls - because they are cheap, delicious, they do not have to cook and quick. Almost like the Singapore version of fast food - if you like. Please note - Singapore is very hot on cleanliness especially on food refreshments preparation in public. So you need not worry about coming down with any illness eating at these places - unlike other places in the Far East. It is very very unheard of cases where it is reported of any illness occuring in public food stalls. I can assure you. Remember ALL hawker stalls in Singapore are very closely monitored by the government. Stalls are even subjected to government spies roaming their stalls and if anything untoward happens they are either given a warning with a hefty fine or shut down immediately. How reassuring is that.

Try Stall #64 for traditional authentic malay coconut rice and curries. Amazing flavours and food not targeted for tourists, as opposed to the numerous BBQ seafood stalls.

Go for the chicken curry, coconut rice. 2 outstanding items: the chilli sambal sauce and the honey sesame chicken. Freshly coated in a thick dark honey sauce, amazing. Not something you would typically find anywhere else in Singapore (as shared with my Singaporean friend).

Prices are cheap too between US$2-3 per dish.

the food is fantastic...have the crab....i didnt know it was going to be a market type setting when i first went. and some of the vendors are more pushy than others. its a good idea to take a quick walk to find exactly what you want. It will feel like everyone has the same food but prices are different from one to the other and you'll find every so often one shop will have something completely different.

They also serve Indian (South Asian) food. Super yummy and oily. But it's also a tourist trap so food is quite a bit more expensive than other hawker centres. If you want a less sanitized version, try Ghim Moh hawker centre which is near Buona Vista MRT.
