Oct 2, 2008 Lao Pa Sat means old market in Chinese and is the largest Victorian filligree building in Singapore housing dozens of food stalls. Slightly more expensive than the average food court in Singapore, there is hardly a better place to sample some fine bee hoon noodles or fried carrot cake (more on this strangely titled dish later) sitting besides a cleaner or a bond trader from Singapore's nearby CBD (Central Business District). If you manage to find a seat in this hugely popular, albeit touristified eating hub during lunch time, you get top notch people viewing as well as a selection of Singapore's finest local dishes. For the real foodies amongst us, carrot cake is not actually that piece of cake you buy at your local coffee shop. In Singapore carrot cake, also known as Chai Tow Kway, is a mix of radish flour cakes sauteed with chilli paste, garlic, eggs, fish sauce and spring onions. Tossed and tossed until perfectly stir fried you can get the black or white variety depending on what soy sauce has been used. Absolute delish and not available at every food court in Singapore so to make sure you get a taste of it, head to Lao Pa Sat. Jan 13, 2009 It's the best place to sample truly Singaporean cuisine. It's a market with plenty of food stalls to choose from and really friendly uncles and aunties who do not hesitate to show you an outdoor table. Try the famous Singaporean Chili Crab. Or the Fish Head Curry. Enjoy the market's colonial architecture and burn off the calories by taking a walk to the waterfront Merlion Park where photo opportunties abound.
