Founded in 1908 by Philippe Mathieu, Philippe's claims to be the inventor of the French Dip sandwich.  The story goes that while making a roast sandwich, Philippe accidentally droped the french roll into the roasting pan.  Today, Philippe's is one of the institutional restaurants of Los Angeles, and the place is always packed.

I came here after reading numerous reviews about this place, and by recommendation ordered the lamb dip. The place was very busy, but the multiple lines moved quickly so I didn't have much of a wait at all. I had expected to be served the sandwich with the dip on the side, but was surprised it comes pre-dipped. You can order it regular, double dipped, or wet. I can't imagine what wet is like as I already found regular pretty soggy. The flavour was good, the lamb was tender, but I personally couldn't get past the soggy texture of the bread. Philippe's makes their own mustard, so I put some on, and I tell ya, that stuff clears sinuses worse than wasabi. The pain that shot through my nose after my first bite was intense! The lamb dips run at about $7.95 a sandwich. Overall I enjoyed the atmosphere a bit more than the food, but was worth the visit.
