I was down in LA to visit a friend who was there for a conference. Since he's from Canada, we wanted to pick a type of food that he couldn't find at home. IMO, the Mexican food in Canada just does. not. exist. compared to any Mexican place in California. So after some research, this place came up.

Cool thing about this place (or stressful depending on how you look at it), is that there is no written menu. The owner, Frank Romero, will actually come up to your table and recount the options. You can cheat and look at the menu on the web site if you want first. ;) Frank is very entertaining in his descriptions. I went for some creamy shrimp dish with cilantro that was quite good. The gang went for chicken I think.

The thing is that when you order dishes here you don't just get the dish. It ends up being this multi-course meal deal starting with a bowl of pickled vegetables. You also get the requisite chips salsa. Next came soup, a mini taco/ appetizer style burrito. Only after that comes your main, followed by a dessert. If you know the owner well enough, I saw multiple tables being served some sort of aperitif - but I wasn't in that category :p

Food came out a bit pricey (compared to my normal Mexican dining experience) - I think it was about $25 a person, but it was a fun experience. Worth going at least once, and judging by the crowds wait time - other people must think so too. :)

My first time in LA, I wasn't prepared for the wait (or the parking) but they were definitely worth it.

Went for creamy chicken (no idea what it was called since there was no menu). Without the menu, I wasn't prepared for the multi-course action that was to come. Price was a little more than I guessed it might be, but still decent value.

The only thing I would skip are the margaritas. Too orangey/weak.
