Restaurant Cafe 96 is a simple
restaurant full of character located by
the river and serving many of Hoi An's
specialities. We arrived in the late
afternoon after a long day without food
and started by ordering white rose.
These delicate dumplings filled with
pork and shrimp and dipped in delicious
fish sauce are simply heavenly. We
quickly understood that the food here
was something else. Indeed the servings
may have been small, but the quality was
simply outstanding. We followed with
cao lau, which are noodles with some
sort of croutons on top and made with
water from a well. Well this was
another divine experience and we were
now totally plunged into a world full
of totally mouth-watering food. The
flavours and textures were so unusual
but yet worked incredibly well. We
ended our degustation with some other
dumplings, this time crispy and served
with superb dipping sauce. We had
found what is for sure Vietnam's best
food. We did try these dishes in a few
other places, and although they were
good and the servings usually bigger,
the quality just wasn't equaled. I
strongly recommend this place to anyone
wanting to sample a little piece of
heaven! By the way the set menus are no
longer available. The service was also
excellent, our host clearly delighted
to see us enjoying his food immensely.
