Afghanistan Natural Environment

Geography of Afghanistan

Afghanistan is situated in the south western part of the Asian continent.  It has a total land area of about 647,500 sq km.  The country is completely landlocked.  It shares borders with China in the north east, Pakistan in the east and south, Iran in the west, and Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in the north.

The Hindu Kush mountain range, which eventually links up with the Himalayas, splits the country from the east to the west, with its peaks rising to heights of  7,500 meters, and most of the country is characterized by high snow-capped mountains and lands over 2000 meters above sea level, and deep valleys.

Afghanistan Climate

Afghanistan has hot summers and very cold winters especially in the northeastern mountains. Summer high temperatures - from June to August - can reach the low 90s Fahrenheit, in the south and central parts of the country. Winter low temperatures are near freezing, but are much colder up in the higher elevations.

The southwestern parts of the country are generally dry, but the valleys in the east are more humid.
