Something about visiting the birthplace of humankind makes Africa an incredibly compelling destination. A journey to Africa is like a journey through time, stepping back to the dawn of human history and following its footsteps forward as civilizations form, rise and fall. The Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania is one of the most important archaeological sites to understanding human evolution, and is a must-stop for anthropology or archaeology enthusiasts. Or fast forward to the pyramids of Egypt to experience firsthand the impressive structures that have stood the test of time. If you’re more interested in interacting with our close cousins, nothing beats a jungle trek to observe the gentle and endangered gorillas in the beautiful mountain forests, or head to Gombe Stream where Jane Goodall first learned about chimpanzees. If you’re more fascinated by animals such as lions, elephants and leopards, nothing in nature is as awe-inspiring as the thunderous wildebeest migration or the thrill of a cheetah chase. While there, be sure to visit the vast Serengeti Plains or the Masai Mara in Kenya. If thrill seeking is more your thing, consider cage diving with great white sharks in South Africa, or go white water rafting down the Zambezi. For cultural experiences, consider checking out the very atmospheric Djemaa el Fna in Marrakesh. Whatever your passion, this beautiful and rugged continent has much to offer.
