Located near the northeast coast of Algiers, this mountain village contains some of the best preserved Roman ruins to be found in North Africa. The city has been designated a World Heritage Site, and within the town are a theatre with a 3,000 seat capacity, temples, a baptistery and a basilica, arches, and more. The more noteworthy ruins include the Europe House, named after its famous mosaic, contains 18 rooms surrounded by a courtyard and Ionic columns, the baptistery contains original mosaics and a restored dome, and the Great Baths that still contain the pipes and double panels where hot water once circulated. The entrance to Djemila passes through a museum that features mosaics, marble statues, oil lamps, and traditional cookware of the time. Djemila was originally founded as a military garrison in 1 AD, the city (originally named Cuicul) was abandoned by 5AD. The city was renamed Djemila to mean "beautiful" in Arabic.
