Located within the province of the same name, El Oued is an oasis town within the Sahara desert.  Its name means "the River", and its so named as the town is watered by an underground river.  The city is sometimes known as the "City of a Thousand Domes" as most roofs in the city are domed.

Est de l'Algérie. El Oued. Etrange ville. Située en plein milieu d'un désert de sable. Au bout des dernières rues, après la dernière maison : du sable à perte de vue! Pourtant la ville grouille de monde. Et le marché est assez animé. Les constructions ont presque toutes des toits en coupole, d'où le surnom de la ville : El oued, la ville aux mille coupoles.
